Mechanism of Action

Cytarabine (Ara‑C) is a pyrimidine nucleoside analogue that is phosphorylated to Ara‑CTP, which competitively inhibits DNA polymerase and is incorporated into DNA, terminating chain elongation. It is highly specific for S‑phase cells.

Benefits and Advantages

Used in leukemia‑model research, DNA‑polymerase inhibition studies, nucleoside‑metabolism modelling, cell‑cycle analysis, and apoptosis investigations.

Side Effects and Risks

Risks include severe myelosuppression, neurotoxicity, ocular toxicity, GI damage and immunosuppression. Handle with strict cytotoxic‑agent containment.
