Mechanism of Action
Cytosine arabinoside (cytarabine, AraC) is a pyrimidine nucleoside analogue where arabinose replaces ribose. Once phosphorylated to AraCTP, it competes with deoxycytidine triphosphate for incorporation into DNA by DNA polymerase. Incorporation causes chain termination and inhibition of DNA synthesis, particularly in rapidly dividing cells.
