Mechanism of Action
Digitonin is a steroidal saponin that complexes with cholesterol in cell membranes, selectively permeabilizing cholesterolrich membranes. It forms soluble complexes with membrane sterols, making it a powerful tool for controlled cell permeabilization and biochemical extraction.

Used in membranepermeabilization studies, mitochondrialfraction isolation, cholesterolinteraction assays, detergentlike extraction modelling, and lipidraft research.
Side Effects and Risks
Risks include strong membrane lysis, irritation, cytotoxicity, and respiratory sensitivity if inhaled. Handle with biochemicaldetergent precautions.
