Mechanism of Action
Chloroprocaine hydrochloride is an ester-type local anaesthetic that blocks voltage‑gated sodium channels (Nav) in peripheral nerve fibres. By stabilising the inactivated state of Nav channels, it prevents depolarisation and conduction of action potentials, resulting in rapid-onset, short-duration regional anaesthesia. Its high hydrolysis rate by plasma cholinesterases reduces systemic toxicity compared with longer-acting agents.

Used in regional-anaesthesia research, sodium-channel pharmacology, nerve‑block modelling, comparative anaesthetic kinetics, and studies examining ester–amide anaesthetic distinctions. Its rapid onset makes it ideal for short-duration procedural models.

Risks include allergic reactions (more common with ester anaesthetics), CNS excitation or depression at high exposure, cardiovascular collapse in overdose and neurotoxicity if administered intrathecally at excessive concentrations. Handle with local-anaesthetic safety protocols.
