Mechanism of action
Biperiden lactate is a soluble esterified form of biperiden, a central anticholinergic agent that selectively antagonises muscarinic M receptors in the striatum. By reducing cholinergic tone, it helps rebalance dopaminergiccholinergic signalling, a mechanism key in extrapyramidal symptom management. The lactate form improves solubility, enabling precise titration in experimental systems.
Benefits and advantages
Used in neuropharmacology research, Parkinsonism modelling, extrapyramidal-symptom studies, central muscarinic-blockade assays and investigations into basal-ganglia neurotransmission. Also applied in salt-form comparison and CNS delivery optimisation.
Side effects and risks
Risks include cognitive impairment, blurred vision, dry mouth, urinary retention, tachycardia and central anticholinergic syndrome at high doses. Handle with CNS-active antimuscarinic precautions.
