Product Description
Mechanism of action
Basiliximab is a chimeric monoclonal antibody (IgG1κ) that selectively targets the interleukin‑2 receptor α‑chain (CD25) expressed on activated T‑lymphocytes. By binding CD25, basiliximab blocks IL‑2–mediated clonal expansion of T‑cells, preventing progression of the cellular immune response. As CD25 is upregulated only after T‑cell activation, basiliximab exhibits functional selectivity without widespread immunosuppression.
Benefits and advantages
Basiliximab is central in research on T‑cell activation, transplant immunology, cytokine signalling, graft rejection, and immunomodulator design. Its high receptor specificity allows precise modelling of IL‑2–driven lymphocyte proliferation and CD25‑targeted therapies. Useful in tolerance‑induction studies and comparison of biologic vs small‑molecule immunosuppressants.
Side effects and risks
Potential risks include hypersensitivity, infection susceptibility, lymphopenia, gastrointestinal disturbances and rare anaphylactoid reactions. As a monoclonal antibody, it must be handled under biological‑agent containment with protection from temperature fluctuations and contamination.
