Mechanism of Action

Furosemide is a loop diuretic that inhibits the NaK2Cl cotransporter (NKCC2) in the thick ascending limb of Henles loop, reducing reabsorption of sodium, chloride and potassium. This markedly increases diuresis and natriuresis, reduces extracellular fluid volume and lowers venous pressures.

Used in renalphysiology modelling, electrolytetransport research, edema and heartfailure studies and NKCC2 inhibition assays.

Side Effects and Risks

Risks include hypokalemia, hyponatremia, dehydration, ototoxicity (high doses), hypotension and metabolic alkalosis. Handle with diureticclass precautions and electrolytemonitoring awareness.
