Mechanism of Action
Deserpidine is a rauwolfia alkaloid structurally related to reserpine that irreversibly blocks vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2). This prevents storage of norepinephrine, dopamine and serotonin in synaptic vesicles, depleting monoamine levels and reducing sympathetic tone.

Side Effects and Risks
Risks include depression, sedation, hypotension, bradycardia, GI upset, nasal congestion and extrapyramidal symptoms. Handle with VMATmodulator safety procedures.
