Mechanism of Action
Clomipramine hydrochloride is a tricyclic antidepressant that strongly inhibits serotonin reuptake and, to a lesser extent, norepinephrine reuptake. It also modulates histamine, cholinergic and adrenergic receptors. Its potent serotonergic action underlies its efficacy in obsessive‑compulsive‑behaviour models.

Used in SERT/NET transporter studies, obsessive‑compulsive‑pathway modelling, behavioural pharmacology, receptor‑interaction assays and tricyclic‑SAR analysis.
Side Effects and Risks
Risks include anticholinergic effects, arrhythmias, seizures (high dose), sedation, weight gain and serotonin syndrome. Handle with tricyclic‑antidepressant safety controls.
