Mechanism of Action
Cisplatin is a platinum-based chemotherapeutic that forms covalent DNA crosslinks, primarily 1,2-intrastrand d(GpG) and d(ApG) adducts. These distort the DNA helix, inhibit replication and transcription, and activate apoptotic pathways via p53 and mitochondrial signalling. It is highly effective against rapidly dividing tumour cells.

Used in DNA-damage pathway research, cancer-cell apoptosis modelling, platinum-resistance studies (efflux pumps, DNA repair), oncology drug-delivery research and tumour xenograft modelling.
Side Effects and Risks
Risks include nephrotoxicity, ototoxicity, neuropathy, severe nausea, electrolyte disturbances and myelosuppression. Handle with full cytotoxic-agent containment.
