Mechanism of action
Bemetizide is a thiazidelike diuretic that inhibits Na⁺/Cl reabsorption in the distal convoluted tubule by blocking the Na⁺/Cl symporter (NCC). This increases urinary excretion of sodium, chloride and water, contributing to reduced plasma volume and lowered blood pressure.
Benefits and advantages
Used in renaltransport research, electrolyte homeostasis studies, antihypertensive pharmacology, nephronsegment physiology and diuretic SAR comparisons. Also useful for modelling compensatory RAAS activation.
Side effects and risks
Risks include hyponatraemia, hypokalaemia, hypotension, hyperuricaemia and possible metabolic disturbances. Must be handled with diureticactive compound safety measures.
