ACETRIZOIC ACID
Acetrizoic acid is an iodinated radiographic contrast agent that enhances visualization during imaging by absorbing Xrays. It is used in urography and angiography. Benefits include reliable contrast enhancement and rapid renal clearance. Risks include allergic reactions, renal strain in susceptible patients, and transient nausea or warmth during administration, requiring caution in those with kidney impairment. Product Description
Mechanism of action
Acetrizoic acid is an iodinated benzoic acid derivative formerly used as a watersoluble radiographic contrast agent. Its high iodine content provides strong Xray attenuation, allowing opacification of vascular and urinary structures during imaging procedures. It is pharmacologically inert apart from its osmotic and physicochemical effects in the intravascular and renal compartments.
Benefits and advantages
As a classical iodinated contrast medium, acetrizoic acid enabled visualisation of organs and vessels on conventional radiography. Its water solubility and relative stability made it compatible with intravascular and urographic applications under controlled conditions.
Side effects and risks
Older highosmolar contrast agents such as acetrizoic acid are associated with a higher incidence of adverse reactions, including pain at the injection site, nausea, vomiting, osmotic fluid shifts, nephrotoxicity and hypersensitivity or anaphylactoid reactions. Because safer lowosmolar and isoosmolar agents are now available, use of acetrizoic acid has largely been discontinued in many settings. Handling of the raw material requires appropriate precautions to avoid exposure to concentrated iodinated compounds.
