Mechanism of action
Betamethasone valerate is a mid‑potency glucocorticoid ester used extensively in topical delivery. After enzymatic cleavage, the active steroid modulates glucocorticoid‑responsive genes, suppressing inflammation, pruritus and vasodilation. Micronisation maximises surface area and uniformity for topical absorption.
Benefits and advantages
Important in dermatopharmacology, excipient–absorption interaction studies, corticosteroid potency scaling, percutaneous transport modelling and receptor-mediated gene expression research. Commonly used as a standard comparator for moderate-strength topical steroids.
Side effects and risks
Risks include local irritation, dermal atrophy, systemic absorption and immunosuppression with excessive use. Handle with protective gloves to avoid dermal steroid exposure.
