Mechanism of Action
Ceftriaxone is a third‑generation cephalosporin with long half‑life and broad activity against gram‑negative and gram‑positive pathogens. It binds PBPs and disrupts cell‑wall synthesis. Its strong CNS penetration makes it a primary agent in meningitis models. High protein binding contributes to sustained serum levels.

Used extensively in CNS‑infection modelling, sepsis research, PBP‑selectivity studies, β‑lactam PK/PD evaluations, neonatal infection models and resistance‑mechanism investigations. A global reference drug for extended‑spectrum cephalosporins.
Side Effects and Risks
Risks include biliary sludge, hypersensitivity, rare haemolysis, GI upset and selection of resistant strains. Handle with strict antimicrobial precautions.
