Mechanism of action
Cefpodoxime proxetil is an oral prodrug converted in vivo to cefpodoxime. The active cephalosporin binds PBPs and inhibits cell-wall peptidoglycan crosslinking in gram-negative and gram-positive organisms. The proxetil ester significantly improves oral absorption and systemic exposure.

Used in oral β‑lactam PK research, respiratory-pathogen studies, community-infection modelling, β‑lactamase-resistance investigations, cephalosporin SAR profiling, and prodrug-hydrolysis studies.
Side effects and risks
Risks include GI upset, hypersensitivity, dysbiosis, hepatic enzyme elevation and rare haematologic changes. Handle with routine antimicrobial safety measures.
