Mechanism of Action
Gabapentin is a structural analogue of GABA that binds with high affinity to the 2 subunit of presynaptic voltagegated calcium channels. This reduces calcium influx and decreases release of excitatory neurotransmitters such as glutamate and substance P, leading to antiepileptic and analgesic effects in neuropathicpain models.

Side Effects and Risks
Common adverse effects include dizziness, somnolence, ataxia, peripheral edema and weight gain. Handle with CNSactive antiepileptic precautions.
