Mechanism of Action
Etomidate is an imidazolederived intravenous anesthetic that enhances GABAA receptor activity at 2/3 subunits. It induces rapid hypnosis with minimal cardiovascular depression due to minimal effects on sympathetic tone. Etomidate also transiently inhibits adrenal 11hydroxylase.

Side Effects and Risks
Risks include adrenal suppression, myoclonus, nausea, injectionsite pain and rare seizures. Handle with IVanesthetic precautions.
