Mechanism of Action
Etomidate is an imidazole‑derived intravenous anesthetic that enhances GABA‑A receptor activity at β2/β3 subunits. It induces rapid hypnosis with minimal cardiovascular depression due to minimal effects on sympathetic tone. Etomidate also transiently inhibits adrenal 11β‑hydroxylase.

Used in anesthetic‑mechanism research, GABA‑A subtype pharmacology, endocrine‑suppression studies, and rapid‑induction modelling.
Side Effects and Risks
Risks include adrenal suppression, myoclonus, nausea, injection‑site pain and rare seizures. Handle with IV‑anesthetic precautions.
