Mechanism of Action
Ergonovine (ergometrine) is a semisynthetic ergot alkaloid that is a potent agonist at uterine smoothmuscle 5HT and adrenergic receptors. It increases intracellular Ca²⁺ and strongly stimulates uterine contractions, particularly postpartum. It also constricts peripheral blood vessels.

Side Effects and Risks
Risks include hypertension, coronary vasospasm, myocardial ischemia, uterine hyperstimulation, nausea and ergotism with overdose. Handle with highpotency uterotonicergot precautions.
