Mechanism of Action
Donepezil is a reversible, non‑competitive acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor that increases acetylcholine levels in synaptic clefts, especially in the cortex and hippocampus. It has high selectivity for AChE over butyrylcholinesterase, supporting cognition‑related neural transmission.

Used in neurodegeneration research, cholinergic‑synapse modelling, AChE‑inhibition assays, Alzheimer’s‑pathophysiology studies, and cholinergic‑neurotransmission enhancement research.
Side Effects and Risks
Risks include bradycardia, GI symptoms, insomnia, muscle cramps, syncope and rare cholinergic toxicity. Handle with cholinesterase‑inhibitor precautions.
