Mechanism of Action
Dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) is an oral heavy‑metal chelator with two thiol groups that bind lead, mercury and arsenic. It forms stable, water‑soluble complexes eliminated via urine. It does not significantly chelate essential minerals, making it safer than BAL.
Benefits and Advantages
Used in heavy‑metal exposure modelling, chelation‑efficacy assays, toxicology studies, and succinic‑acid thiol‑reactivity research.
Side Effects and Risks
Risks include nausea, rash, elevated liver enzymes, neutropenia and sulfur‑related odor. Handle with thiol‑chelating‑agent precautions.
