Product Description

Mechanism of action

Carbocysteine (S-carboxymethylcysteine) is a mucolytic agent that modifies the viscosity and elasticity of mucus. It acts by breaking disulfide bonds within mucin glycoproteins and regulating sialomucin–fucosomucin ratios, thereby restoring normal mucus rheology. It also exerts antioxidant and mild anti-inflammatory effects within the respiratory epithelium.

Benefits and advantages

Used in respiratory-mucus rheology research, chronic bronchitis and COPD models, mucociliary-clearance studies, oxidative-stress investigations and airway-remodelling research. It is a reference mucoregulating compound in pulmonary pharmacology.

Side effects and risks

Risks include gastrointestinal discomfort, nausea, rare hypersensitivity reactions and, at very high doses, potential gastric irritation. Handle as a relatively low-toxicity respiratory adjunct with standard lab precautions.
