Product Description
Mechanism of action
Captopril is an angiotensinconverting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor that prevents conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II. This reduces vasoconstriction, aldosterone release, sympathetic outflow and sodium retention. It also inhibits bradykinin degradation, enhancing vasodilation via nitric oxide and prostaglandin pathways. Its sulfhydryl group contributes to potent ACE inhibition.
Benefits and advantages
Used in cardiovascular research, RAASpathway modelling, hypertension studies, heartfailure investigations, endothelialfunction experiments and ACEinhibitor SAR analysis. Also used to examine renoprotective mechanisms in diabetic nephropathy.
Side effects and risks
Risks include cough, hypotension, hyperkalaemia, angioedema, renal impairment and rash. Handle with antihypertensiveactive compound precautions.
