Mechanism of action
Benidipine is a dihydropyridine calcium-channel blocker that inhibits L-, N-, and T-type calcium channels, providing a broader spectrum of calcium-channel modulation than classical dihydropyridines. It reduces peripheral vascular resistance, lowers blood pressure and offers cardioprotective and renoprotective effects.
Benefits and advantages
Used in cardiovascular pharmacology, calcium-channel subtype research, renal haemodynamics studies, endothelial function experiments and comparative dihydropyridine SAR analysis. Also valuable in nephropathy and microvascular models.
Side effects and risks
Risks include hypotension, headache, flushing, pedal oedema, gingival hyperplasia and rare hepatic disturbances. Requires CNS- and cardiovascular-active handling precautions.
