Mechanism of action
Bendroflumethiazide is a thiazide diuretic that inhibits the Na⁺/Cl symporter (NCC) in the distal convoluted tubule, reducing sodium and chloride reabsorption and promoting natriuresis and diuresis. The drug also decreases urinary calcium excretion and produces modest vasodilatory effects by lowering intracellular sodium in vascular smooth muscle.
Benefits and advantages
Bendroflumethiazide is widely used in renal transport studies, electrolyte homeostasis research, distal tubule physiology models, blood pressure regulation experiments, and thiazide SAR investigations. It is also important in studies of calcium handling in kidney function.
Side effects and risks
Risks include hyponatraemia, hypokalaemia, hyperuricaemia, metabolic disturbances, photosensitivity and hypotension. Thiazide-active safety handling is required.
