Product Description
Mechanism of action
Acetylmethionine is an acetylated derivative of the essential amino acid L‑methionine. It acts as a source of methionine and, indirectly, of sulfur‑containing metabolites such as cysteine and glutathione, which are involved in methylation reactions and cellular antioxidant defence.
Benefits and advantages
Acetylmethionine offers improved stability and handling compared with free methionine in certain formulations. It has been explored as a hepatoprotective and detoxifying agent, supporting hepatic metabolism and conjugation reactions, and as a nutritional supplement in specialised medical nutrition products.
Side effects and risks
At appropriate doses, acetylmethionine is generally well tolerated, but excessive intake of methionine derivatives can contribute to elevations in homocysteine or acid load. Patients with severe hepatic or metabolic disorders require careful supervision. As an API, it should be manufactured and stored under conditions that prevent degradation and contamination.
