Mechanism of Action
Furazolidone is a nitrofuran antimicrobial that is enzymatically reduced in susceptible microorganisms to highly reactive intermediates capable of damaging DNA, ribosomal proteins and other critical macromolecules. It interferes with carbohydrate metabolism and nucleicacid synthesis in bacteria and protozoa.

Side Effects and Risks
Risks include GI upset, hemolytic anemia in G6PDdeficient subjects, hypersensitivity reactions and potential carcinogenicity. Handle with nitrofuranclass cytotoxic and genotoxic precautions.
