Etomidate is an imidazolederived intravenous anesthetic that enhances GABAA receptor activity at 2/3 subunits. It induces rapid hypnosis with minimal cardiovascular depression due to minimal effects on sympathetic tone. Etomidate also transiently inhibits adrenal 11hydroxylase.
