Mechanism of Action
Ergonovine (ergometrine) is a semi‑synthetic ergot alkaloid that is a potent agonist at uterine smooth‑muscle 5‑HT₂ and α‑adrenergic receptors. It increases intracellular Ca²⁺ and strongly stimulates uterine contractions, particularly postpartum. It also constricts peripheral blood vessels.

Used in uterine‑contractility studies, vascular‑smooth muscle research, migraine‑trigger modelling, and ergot‑receptor pharmacology assays.
Side Effects and Risks
Risks include hypertension, coronary vasospasm, myocardial ischemia, uterine hyperstimulation, nausea and ergotism with overdose. Handle with high‑potency uterotonic‑ergot precautions.
