Mechanism of Action
Ergocalciferol (vitamin D) is a secosteroid produced by UV irradiation of ergosterol. In vivo, it is hydroxylated in the liver to 25hydroxyD and in the kidney to the active form 1,25dihydroxyD, which binds vitaminD receptors (VDR). VDR activation regulates calcium and phosphate homeostasis, bone mineralization and a wide range of immune and endocrine genes.

Side Effects and Risks
Risks include hypercalcemia, hyperphosphatemia, nephrocalcinosis, GI upset and softtissue calcification with excessive dosing. Handle with fatsoluble vitaminanalog precautions.
