Mechanism of Action
Emetine hydrochloride is an isoquinoline alkaloid that inhibits the 40S ribosomal subunit, blocking protein elongation and disrupting protozoal and mammalian protein synthesis. It also interferes with mitochondrial function and induces apoptosis in rapidly dividing cells. Historically used against *Entamoeba histolytica*, it remains a valuable biochemical tool.
