Mechanism of Action
Cholestyramine is a strongly basic anionexchange resin that binds bile acids in the intestine, preventing their reabsorption. This forces hepatic conversion of cholesterol into new bile acids, lowering intracellular cholesterol and upregulating LDL receptors. It also interrupts enterohepatic cycling of various xenobiotics.

Side Effects and Risks
Risks include constipation, bloating, fatsoluble vitamin deficiency, interference with oral drug absorption and rare metabolic acidosis. Handle with gastrointestinalpolymer precautions.
