Mechanism of Action
Chlorotheophylline is a xanthine derivative related to caffeine and theophylline. It acts as a CNS stimulant by inhibiting phosphodiesterase, increasing intracellular cAMP, and antagonising adenosine receptors (A1/A2A). This reduces sedation, enhances alertness and promotes respiratory stimulation.
Benefits and Advantages
Used in CNSstimulation research, adenosinereceptor pharmacology, PDEinhibition assays, respiratorydrive modelling, and as a stimulant component in combination formulations such as dimenhydrinate. Valuable in studies evaluating antihistamineinduced sedation reversal.
Side Effects and Risks
Risks include tachycardia, insomnia, anxiety, tremors, GI irritation and, at high levels, seizures or arrhythmias. Handle with CNSstimulant precautions.
