Product Description
Mechanism of action
Carmustine (BCNU) is a nitrosourea alkylating agent that produces DNA interstrand and intrastrand crosslinks through chloroethyl carbocation intermediates. It also carbamoylates proteins, inhibiting repair enzymes. These effects disrupt replication, transcription and cell‑cycle progression, causing apoptosis. Carmustine easily crosses the blood–brain barrier due to high lipophilicity.

Used in neuro‑oncology research, glioma models, DNA‑alkylation pathway studies, apoptosis‑signalling research, protein‑carbamoylation investigations and chemotherapeutic‑drug‑resistance modelling.
Side effects and risks
Risks include severe myelosuppression, pulmonary fibrosis, hepatic toxicity, seizures, nausea and long‑term risk of secondary malignancies. Handle with full cytotoxic‑agent containment.
