Mechanism of action
Carindacilline (carbenicillin indanyl ester) is a prodrug designed to enhance oral stability and absorption of carbenicillin. After intestinal ester hydrolysis, active carbenicillin inhibits cell‑wall synthesis by binding PBPs and blocking peptidoglycan crosslinking. It is particularly effective against gram‑negative bacteria including *Pseudomonas* species.

Used in oral β‑lactam pharmacokinetics research, prodrug‑activation modelling, bacterial PBP‑binding studies, gram‑negative susceptibility assays and β‑lactam SAR investigations.
Side effects and risks
Risks include hypersensitivity, GI upset, hepatic enzyme elevation, sodium‑associated electrolyte changes and platelet dysfunction. Handle under antimicrobial compound precautions.
