Mechanism of action
Bucillamine is a thiol‑containing cysteine derivative with strong antioxidant and immunomodulatory properties. It donates thiol groups, enhances glutathione recycling, scavenges reactive oxygen species and modulates inflammatory signalling pathways. It also acts as a disease‑modifying antirheumatic agent (DMARD).

Used in oxidative‑stress studies, glutathione‑metabolism research, redox‑biology modelling, autoimmune‑disease investigations, rheumatology drug‑development and thiol‑reactivity assays.
Side effects and risks
Risks include rash, proteinuria, agranulocytosis, hepatic enzyme changes and hypersensitivity reactions. Handle under thiol‑reactive‑compound safety controls.
