Mechanism of action
Broxyuridine (5‑bromoxyuridine, BrXU) is a halogenated uridine analogue incorporated into replicating DNA, disrupting base pairing and increasing DNA fragility. It is used as a thymidine substitute and acts as a radiosensitiser by enhancing DNA damage under ionising radiation.

Critical in DNA‑replication studies, radiosensitisation research, mutagenesis assays, nucleotide‑analogue comparisons, cell‑cycle tracking and DNA‑repair pathway analysis.
Side effects and risks
Risks include mutagenicity, cytotoxicity, teratogenicity and photosensitivity. Handle under nucleoside‑analogue and radiomimetic‑compound containment procedures.
