Mechanism of action
Brompheniramine maleate is a firstgeneration H-antihistamine that competitively inhibits histamine binding, reducing vasodilation, vascular permeability and allergic symptoms. Its strong lipophilicity enables CNS penetration, producing sedation and anticholinergic effects.

Used in allergy-mechanism studies, histamine-receptor pharmacology, anticholinergic-burden research, sedativeantihistamine comparisons and structureactivity modelling of alkylamine antihistamines.
Side effects and risks
Risks include sedation, dizziness, anticholinergic effects (dry mouth, urinary retention), tachycardia and impaired cognition. Handle under antihistamine/CNSactive compound precautions.
