Mechanism of action
Bromdiphenhydramine is a brominated analogue of diphenhydramine with strong H₁‑antihistaminic activity. It competitively blocks H₁ receptors, reducing histamine‑driven allergic responses. It easily crosses the blood–brain barrier, producing significant sedative and anticholinergic effects.
Benefits and advantages
Used in histamine‑receptor research, CNS‑sedative comparison studies, anticholinergic‑burden modelling, allergy pharmacology and membrane‑permeability studies of lipophilic antihistamines.
Side effects and risks
Risks include sedation, anticholinergic toxicity, cognitive impairment, tachycardia, urinary retention and paradoxical excitability in some subjects. Handle with CNS‑active antihistamine precautions.
