Mechanism of action
Biperiden is an anticholinergic agent that selectively antagonises central muscarinic M receptors, reducing cholinergic activity in the striatum. This restores dopaminergiccholinergic balance and is used to model or treat extrapyramidal symptoms associated with dopamine antagonism. It also exhibits mild antihistaminic and antispasmodic activity.
Benefits and advantages
Used in Parkinsons-disease research, extrapyramidal-symptom modelling, central muscarinic-receptor studies, cholinergic signalling investigations and anticholinergic SAR development.
Side effects and risks
Risks include cognitive impairment, dry mouth, blurred vision, urinary retention, tachycardia and central anticholinergic syndrome. Handle with CNS-active antimuscarinic precautions.
