Mechanism of Action
Physostigmine is a reversible acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor. By preventing the breakdown of acetylcholine, it increases cholinergic neurotransmission at muscarinic and nicotinic receptors. It crosses the blood–brain barrier and enhances central cholinergic tone.
Benefits and Advantages
Used in cholinesterase‑inhibition studies, CNS cholinergic‑pathway modelling, antidote‑mechanism research, and neuromuscular‑transmission assays.
Side Effects and Risks
Risks include bradycardia, bronchospasm, excessive salivation, seizures (overdose) and cholinergic crisis. Handle with AChE‑inhibitor precautions.
