Mechanism of action
Benethamine penicillin is a long-acting penicillin designed to slowly release benzylpenicillin following intramuscular administration. It inhibits bacterial cell-wall synthesis by binding penicillin-binding proteins, preventing peptidoglycan cross-linking and causing cell lysis in susceptible organisms.
Benefits and advantages
Used in pharmacokinetic modelling of long-acting antibiotic esters, β-lactam stability studies, sustained-release formulation research and microbial susceptibility testing. It is important for studying depot-release kinetics.
Side effects and risks
Risks include hypersensitivity reactions, injection-site irritation and rare neurological events with accidental intravascular injection. Handle with β-lactam sensitisation precautions.
