Product Description
Mechanism of action
Azithromycin is an azalide macrolide antibiotic that binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit near the peptidyl transferase centre, blocking bacterial protein synthesis by inhibiting translocation. Its extended lactone ring enhances acid stability and tissue penetration, providing long intracellular half‑life and high concentrations in phagocytes.
Benefits and advantages
Extensively used in microbiology, immunomodulation research, intracellular delivery studies, biofilm disruption investigations and ribosomal structural biology. Also key for studying macrolide resistance mechanisms such as erm‑mediated ribosomal methylation and efflux pumps.
Side effects and risks
Risks include QT prolongation, hepatic dysfunction, gastrointestinal disturbance and antimicrobial resistance selection. Handle with antibiotic API controls.
