Product Description
Mechanism of action
Astromycin is a macrolide-type antibiotic (naming used for certain macrolide derivatives) that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, specifically near the peptidyl transferase centre. This binding blocks translocation of the peptidyl-tRNA and interferes with elongation of the nascent peptide chain, resulting in bacteriostatic or bactericidal effects depending on organism and concentration.
Benefits and advantages
Astromycin and related macrolides are employed in microbiology research to investigate ribosomal function, macrolide binding sites, efflux-mediated resistance and ribosomal methylase modifications. They also serve as reference compounds in studies of intracellular antibiotic distribution and immunomodulatory effects of macrolides.
Side effects and risks
Adverse effects for macrolides typically include gastrointestinal upset, cholestatic liver injury and, for some agents, QT prolongation. Handling requires standard antibiotic API precautions to minimise inhalation, skin contact and environmental release that might select for resistance.
