Product Description

Mechanism of action

Acetylspiramycin is an acetylated macrolide antibiotic derived from spiramycin. It exerts its antibacterial effect by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria, inhibiting peptide chain elongation and protein synthesis. The acetylated form can modify pharmacokinetic properties such as tissue distribution and oral bioavailability.

Benefits and advantages

Macrolides like acetylspiramycin are active against a range of Grampositive cocci and atypical pathogens and show good penetration into respiratory and soft tissues. The compound has been used where a macrolide with specific pharmacokinetic characteristics is desired.

Side effects and risks

Typical adverse effects of macrolides include gastrointestinal upset, abdominal pain and, rarely, hepatic dysfunction or cholestatic jaundice. Macrolides can also prolong the QT interval and interact with other drugs via cytochrome P450 inhibition. Appropriate patient screening and monitoring are essential in therapeutic use; handling of the API should minimise inhalation of antibiotic dust to avoid sensitisation and resistance selection.
