Mechanism of Action
Etidronate disodium is a firstgeneration bisphosphonate that binds strongly to hydroxyapatite in bone. It inhibits osteoclastmediated bone resorption by interfering with ATPdependent intracellular pathways and inducing osteoclast apoptosis. Because etidronate also affects mineralization at high doses, it has dual actions on bone turnover and calcification.

Side Effects and Risks
Risks include hypocalcemia, osteomalacia (high doses), GI irritation, and rare atypical calcification disturbances. Handle with bisphosphonateclass precautions.
