Mechanism of Action
Econazole nitrate is an imidazole-class antifungal that inhibits fungal cytochrome P450–dependent 14‑α‑demethylase, a key enzyme in the ergosterol biosynthesis pathway. Blocking lanosterol demethylation disrupts membrane synthesis, increases permeability, and leads to fungal cell death. The nitrate salt enhances solubility and formulation stability.

Used in ergosterol‑pathway studies, azole‑mechanism assays, dermatophyte and yeast growth‑inhibition models, and antifungal‑resistance research.
Side Effects and Risks
