Mechanism of Action
Deoxycholic acid is a secondary bile acid generated by bacterial 7α‑dehydroxylation of cholic acid. It emulsifies dietary fats, disrupts lipid membranes and activates bile‑acid receptors such as FXR and TGR5, influencing metabolic, inflammatory and digestive pathways. It also promotes adipocyte lysis by membrane disruption.

Used in bile‑acid receptor modelling, lipid‑digestion research, adipocytolysis assays, microbiome‑bile acid interaction studies and metabolic‑signalling investigations.
Side Effects and Risks
Risks include local tissue irritation, GI discomfort, inflammation, hepatotoxicity at high doses and dermal reactions. Handle as a reactive bile acid.
