Mechanism of Action
Chlorprothixene hydrochloride is the water-soluble salt of chlorprothixene, maintaining identical antipsychotic and sedative mechanisms: antagonism of dopamine D₂, histamine H₁, muscarinic and α₁-adrenergic receptors. The HCl form improves solubility for formulation and analytical applications.

Used in dopamine-antagonist mechanism studies, receptor-binding analysis, psychopharmacology research, behavioural modulation models and structural optimisation experiments within the thioxanthene drug class.
Side Effects and Risks
Risks include sedation, hypotension, anticholinergic effects, weight gain, QT prolongation and extrapyramidal reactions. Handle as a potent CNS depressant.
