Product Description
Mechanism of action
Carbutamide is a first-generation sulfonylurea that stimulates insulin secretion from pancreatic β-cells. It binds to the sulfonylurea receptor 1 (SUR1) subunit of ATP-sensitive potassium (K_ATP) channels, causing channel closure, membrane depolarisation, opening of voltage-gated calcium channels and calcium influx. Elevated intracellular calcium triggers exocytosis of insulin granules.

Used in pancreatic β-cell physiology research, K_ATP-channel signalling investigations, insulin-secretion pathway modelling, sulfonylurea SAR studies and early-type 2 diabetes pharmacology. It provides historical context and mechanistic insight into modern sulfonylureas.
Side effects and risks
Risks include hypoglycaemia, weight gain, GI upset, allergic skin reactions and rare haematologic abnormalities. Handle as a glucose-lowering agent with care to avoid accidental ingestion or significant dermal exposure.
